I See Black People: Catherine Liggins Hughes
The individual that stood out most to me in the book, I See Black People, was Cathy Hughes. I related most to Hughes not only because she is a female, but she is a hard worker, go-getter, and is very dedicated to what she does. Cathy Hughes is the founder and chairperson of Radio One, Inc., the largest African-American owned and operated broadcast-company in the nation. For the first time in the history of radio, a number one ranked major market station is owned by a woman. In 1995, Radio One purchased WKYS in Washington, D.C. for $40 million, and in May 1999, Cathy Hughes and her son, Alfred Liggins (President & CEO), took their company public. This made her the first African-American woman with a company on the stock exchange. Cathy Hughes company is based on the idea of community involvement and support. She strongly believes in giving back to her community and bringing minorities together as a whole. This is another reason I decided to choose Hughes, I also believe in helping and giving back to my community. The profile on Hughes helped me to remember that things will not be handed to you in life, but if you really want to accomplish something in life, you must strive for your dreams, never give up, and always give it your all.
